New Coaches’ Portal
The Coaches’ Corner has been moved a new address for the NYHL Coaches’ Portal which can be accessed at:
The change should speed up access to the site and eliminate timing out problems you may have experienced.
The forms needed for Tournament and Exhibition Games can be downloaded from the portal. In addition there is a number of articles on NYHL policies that apply to team management as well as some insights into rule interpretation and general conduct of the game.
Coaches’ Corner is an ongoing forum of tips and ideas to help the progressive coach.
Contributions are welcome from coaches at any level with the objective of broadening the pool of useful information for the seasoned coach and those just getting started. Whether it is on-ice practice drills or tips on how to manage the team funds your knowledge and experience can be the difference between a good experience and a disaster for some teams. Please direct your suggestions and contributions to epelekis@nyhl.on.ca
Some people feel that good coaching is intuitive and that is partially true. The intuition however comes from a combination of knowledge, experience and motivation. The knowledge is available from many sources, books, web sites, observation of others. Experience comes from applying the knowledge and fine tuning the resources to fit your own situation. Motivation is entirely reliant on the individual; what brought him into coaching in the first place; what weighting he gives to “team” vs “individual”; what measures he has for success – both his own and his team’s; what prerogatives he allows to players, to parents, and to his other coaches; what emphasis he gives to fair play vs winning at any cost. The Coaches’ Corner will, hopefully, create a dialogue of many points of view and offer anecdotal perspectives on what works and what doesn’t along with the pitfalls and paths to success that others have encountered just starting out behind the bench.
Key dates for Team Entry
There have been some changes to the way teams enter and register their players.
In order to be eligible for the fall season Clubs/Coaches must register their team with the NYHL by October 1st latest. There is no provision for late entries. If you miss the October 1st deadline the next opportunity to get in will be the December 1st deadline to be eligible for the winter season and playoffs.
In the past there have been some teams that have entered after the season began and that caused a disruption to the schedule that effected all of the other teams. In April the Club Presidents and Contacts met with the NYHL and it was agreed that no late entries would be accepted after the cut off dates.
Team Listing Forms
Teams are also required to file a Team Listing Form (Roster sheet) not later than November 15th. In the past there was both a NYHL Roster and a GTHL roster that was required. That has been changed to require that only the GTHL Roster be submitted. Rosters filed late (after midnight November 15th) are subject to a $150.00 fine billed to the Club and payable before the team’s next scheduled game.
Each team is required to provide a minimum of 5 days of availability each week.
During the season, each team is allowed to enter three tournaments and have two other exception days for fundraisers, banquets or special events. Tournaments and special exception days will exempt the team from the NYHL schedule on those particular days.. Applications for Permission to attend Tournaments must be in the NYHL office 5 weeks prior to the event. If you are planning to attend a tournament or special occasion, the application must be complete and in the office by 5pm on the Friday 5-weeks in advance of the event.
Team Staff Arena passes
Arena passes for coaching staff are applied for on-line. Fill in the form, upload your photo and send it in to the NYHL office. The passes will be checked against the team lists submitted by the Clubs and given to the Club reps for distribution.
Game Sheets/Suspensions
Game sheets are a key reference for team staff where penalties that carry a suspension are noted. Often the sheets are not picked up at the conclusion of a game and there can be a considerable time delay before those sheets arrive in the office. Coaches are nonetheless responsible for sitting out players who have incurred suspensions. Not sitting them out can result in further supensions and games being taken away where a suspended player participated. Since the Coach bears the responsibility for sitting out those players it is imperative that the game sheets be picked up and examined before the team leaves the arena.
