Concern over H1N1

The NYHL encourages all players, parents and team staff to take extra precaution to avoid picking up the virus or passing it on to others. The virus can be transferred via the objects that we commonly touch without thinking and it can also be rendered airborne through coughing and sneezing.

Handwashing Frequent hand washing with soap and water or using a hand sanitizer such as Purel is still the most basic and most effective precaution. Your family physician can advise you on H1N1 or regular seasonal flu shots. For players, not sharing water bottles, not spitting on the ice or common surfaces, and not coughing or sneezing around others, demonstrates the consideration for others that will help keep the virus from spreading.

Shaking Hands Referees have been instructed to eliminate shaking hands with Team Staff during the pregame introductions at the benches. Players do not shake hands as part of a pregame or post game ritual so that will not change. Many people are already avoiding shaking hands in their day-to-day lives so the change will probably be appreciated.

Hopefully the virus will pass quickly and the concern will soon be over. In the meantime, with a little care and consideration, we can reduce the risks to ourselves and everyone else.

Good Luck and stay healthy!

NYHL Keeps Growing!

The Scarborough Youth Hockey League is the latest Club to be welcomed by the NYHL Board of Directors. The SYHL will enter a Tyke team for the Fall Season with the expectation of a full complement of age groups joining in December for the Winter Season and Playoffs. As the SYHL teams become available this fall, the NYHL will try to schedule some exhibition games to allow a smooth transition into League play. The addition of the SYHL brings the total Club Membership to 31.

NYHL League Welcomes West Hill As 30th Member Club

The Board of Directors wishes to extend a warm welcome to West Hill as the Thirtieth Member Club in the NYHL.The West Hill Club has been in existence for fifty-five years and has a proud heritage in the Toronto Minor Hockey mosaic as Scarborough’s oldest and longest running House League and competitive program. The West Hill Club will enter at least one team in every age division and more than one in some.

The West Hill entries are an addition to the many new teams that have been announced by existing Clubs and indicate a continuation of further positive growth in the NYHL for the coming year. Coming off a very successful 2008-2009, the next season is shaping up to be even better for the NYHL. The tiering of teams according to their relative strength is an important element in the League’s success as it allows teams to compete at their most appropriate competitive level. Judging from the high calibre of play evident in the regular season and in last year’s playoffs, the level of talent playing Select hockey is very good indeed. The combination of house league hockey – where players can play with their friends for the pure fun of it – and the more competitive Select play where those with greater skills receive more of a challenge, the two provide the best value in hockey. For half the cost of playing at other levels, Select hockey addresses all of the best aspects of the game in an environment that is conducive to the balance in life necessary to accommodate the sport we all love with the pressures of school, part time jobs, and relationships.

NYHL Has Enjoyed an Excellent Season

The NYHL Annual General Meeting confirmed that the 2008-2009 season has gone very well. Improvements in the League operation have led to better scheduling and communications. Coaches, players and parents had up to four weeks’ notice of games and locations during the season with scores and standings posted promptly on the website.

Referee-in-Chief Neil McTaggart oversaw the Supervisory Committee who completed well over 400 supervisions of on-ice officials in game situations. In addition, an active mentoring program matched newer, less experienced officials with senior refs who helped with the more than 20 additions to staff that were made this year.

A Council of the Club President’s and Contacts was established and regular meetings held throughout the year. That not only provided a forum for discussion among the Member Clubs but it provided the League with valuable input that helped in the distillation of policy.

League Treasurer Steve Gerry presented the financial statements for the season ended April 30th showing a variance of less than 1% versus budget. Steve also announced the Board’s commitment to keeping gate fees unchanged with a review in December if needed.

All current Board Members including President Bob Svanefelt have agreed to return for the 2009-2010 season and have been acclaimed in their current positions. A list of Board Members and their positions is available under the Administration tab on the home page.
