NYHL Equipment Drive a Great Success

Last weekend, the North York Hockey League ran an incredibly successful equipment drive to support indigenous youth access to hockey. In support of Their Opportunity, the drive received over 130 bags of hockey equipment and 140 hockey sticks. Their Opportunity drives have grown larger each year to the point where today, 1,000 bags of equipment are donated each fall to Indigenous communities across Ontario.

The drive took place over the weekend at Downsview Arena. Basements and garages across the city rejoiced as the clutter of hockey bags and equipment were passed on to those who could make better use of it.

“We’re so happy to have worked with the North York Hockey League this past weekend as we conclude our 10th year of collecting and distributing gently used and new hockey gear. The hockey families came out very strong as we had one of the largest weekends of the year. We look forward to making this an annual event,” said Indigenous Hockey Equipment Drive campaign founder, Graham McWaters.

Thank you to the Duffield Devils, North York Knights, Parkdale Flames, Scarborough Ice Raiders and Seaside Hockey organizations for their generous donations of equipment.   We’d also like to extend a special thank you to Henry and Vanessa Dexter who donated 13 bags of skates. In addition to their equipment donation, Scarborough also donated $1000 to Their Opportunity which the NYHL was happy to match.

Special thank you to the following NYHL teams:

  • U8 Duffield Red
  • U13 Willowdale Hawks
  • U14 Faustina Fury
  • U15 Vaughan Blue
  • U16 North York Knights
  • U16 North Toronto
  • U17 Forest Hill Blue
  • U18 Etobicoke

The above teams and ALL teams from Duffield, North York, Parkdale, Scarborough and Seaside have been entered into December’s Marlies Team of the Month giveaway thanks to your donations.

Through efforts like these, more young people can enjoy the benefits of playing hockey and developing the lifelong skills and friendships that come with it.

We look forward to continuing and growing this drive in the many years to come!
