14 Sep Remembering Great Canadian Boxer, George Chuvalo
George Chuvalo, the great Canadian heavyweight boxer of the 60’s and 70’s, has passed away at the age of 89.
Chuvalo had notable bouts against heavyweight sluggers like Muhammed Ali, Joe Frazier and Joe Foreman and finished his career without ever having been knocked down.
The fight against Muhammed Ali came in 1966 as a replacement opponent for the champ. Chuvalo would go the distance but came up short on the decision. Despite the loss, Ali famously stated, “He’s the toughest guy I ever fought.”
Chuvalo was awarded the Order of Canada in 1998 and received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2005. He was also awarded the Key to the City of Toronto in 2013 for his anti-drug speaking campaigns to Canadian youth and had a community center named after him in the Junction neighbourhood of Toronto in 2019.
